About Mysore University
University of Mysore or Mysore University was formed way back in 1916 by the Maharaja of Mysore, Sir Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and well-known engineer Sir Vishwesvaraya. It was Mysore’s only University at that time and also the only University formed outside the domain of the British. The University had 12 colleges under its supervision and conducted 28 subjects in Arts, Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
One of the oldest Universities of its time, Mysore University slowly graduated into a powerful teaching institution. The Act of 1933 is the first Act of the University which stated the degrees, diplomas, and courses offered by the University. In 1960, an extensive area of more than 700 acres of land was allotted as the campus area. The greenery of the expansive landscape is a delight for any nature lover. On one end is the Kukkarahalli Lake while on the other end is the University’s headoffice, Crawford Hall. Added to this huge main campus, there are two other satellite campuses to accommodate the Post Graduate courses.
Mysore University at first had all the institutes under its wings. Slowly, three additional Universities were formed. A decade back, another University was formed to cater to the distant learning and correspondent courses. With other Universities in the education system, University of Mysore has now been able to improve its curricular and co-curricular activities. Today, the main idea is to exchange technical and cultural thinking across different colleges and institutes.
University of Mysore has 122 affiliated colleges and 5 constituent colleges, 37 post graduate departments, and 8 research centers. The University commands an exhaustive range of academic courses and many programs for the working employees. About 55 courses are offered here for regular students. The research work constitutes projects which attract both national as well as international students.
The wide-ranging subjects and courses associated with them are mainly due to the par excellent infrastructure, expansive space, and exhaustive research material in form of books, journals and articles. Apart from University library and Graduate library, there are e-books, digitized research work, and online reference section.
Mysore University takes good care of the students who come over from different parts of the country to attend lectures of a particular course. There is a swimming pool, Internet facilities, cafeteria, and amphitheatre. There is also an auditorium which hosts many cultural activities.
The administrative work is done from the Crawford Hall – a mega hall with superb architecture that was prevalent during the British rule. Today, it can accommodate 1000 or more workers. With the idea that knowledge is the utmost goal for all, University of Mysore has soared high since its foundation decades back. Eligible students are selected through Common Entrance Test and admission is made as per merit-cum-reservation. There are reservations for sports people, NCC cadres, and students excelling in any cultural activity.
The founders have stressed on the importance of knowledge that is acquired through truthful means. This objective is the basis of its motto, “Nothing is equal to knowledge” and “I always uphold the truth”. True in its endeavor – Mysore University has been living up to its expectations and ideology.
